Moncton city councillor Shawn Crossman reoffering in Ward 1
MONCTON, N.B. – Incumbent councillor Shawn Crossman announced today that he will be running for re-election in Moncton’s Ward 1 in the municipal election to be held on Monday, May 10, 2021. Mr. Crossman is a lifelong resident of Ward 1 and works as an independent sales and distribution representative for furniture and appliances.
“I have collaborated closely with residents, my fellow councillors, City of Moncton staff and other government officials to continue growth in Ward 1 and ensuring it is a great place to live, work, do business and raise a family,” Mr. Crossman said. “Since first being elected in 2012, I have worked very hard for the best interests of the residents of Ward 1. We have seen tremendous growth and I want to be at the council table for the next four years to continue to represent the people of this ward and this city.”
Some of his activities and accomplishments since being elected in 2012 include:
• Elected Deputy Mayor by his fellow councillors three times: 2014-15, 2015-16 and again in 2020-21
• Former co-chair of the City of Moncton Operations Committee
• Currently a member of the following committees:
o Irishtown Nature Park
o Poverty and Social Inclusion
o Crossman Community Centre-Kay Arena
o Internal Auditor Committee
o Downtown Moncton Centre-ville inc. (board of directors)
o Development and Construction Permitting
• Appointed to Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) from 2013-2018 and served on committees such as:
o Community Safety and Crime Prevention
o International Relations
o Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development
o Social-Economic Development
o FCM Atlantic Caucus
o Joint committee with the FCM, Corrections Services Canada and National Parole Board
Some of the projects Mr. Crossman has accomplished since first being elected include:
• Successfully worked to save the East End Pool for local children with a $2-million municipal budget which officially opened in 2019
• Worked to expand Codiac Transpo bus service to Moncton High School and Caledonia Industrial Park
• Worked with City of Moncton staff and the Province of New Brunswick for new Elmwood Drive Interchange with Trans-Canada Highway
• Redevelopment and improvements to Silverwood Park on Silverwood Crescent
• Worked to ensure new fire station for Caledonia Road
• Worked to ensure new water pumping station on Elmwood Drive
• Improvements to Shediac Road infrastructure, Drummond Street, Highlandview Road, Lewisville Road, Kenmore Drive, Wynwood Drive, Castle Drive and Pleasant Street, including streets in Sunny Acres area
• Improvements to Ellerdale Park and East Street Park
• Successfully moved the motion to reinstall rainbow crosswalks in Downtown Moncton
Some future Ward 1 projects which on which Mr. Crossman plans to concentrate for the next four years include:
• Continue to work on infrastructure improvements to Elmwood Drive area in order to accommodate increased development in the area
• Continue to work on infrastructure improvements to the Mill Road area
• Ensure the infrastructure improvements are carried out in the Lewisville Road area, as well as the East End area
• Work to bring forward new recreational projects to Ward 1
• Continue to work on improving safety and traffic concerns on Lewisville Road
• Ensuring that improvements and upgrades to Lewisville Park on Glenmoor Drive go ahead as scheduled in 2021
• Continue to encourage municipal support for the construction of the new Hospice Southeast New Brunswick facility on Pleasant Street
After being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in July 2018, Mr. Crossman underwent successful treatment that included chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. He is now in full remission. Since his diagnosis and during his treatment, he sought to maintain a positive attitude and do what he could to encourage others with multiple myeloma and other cancers.
In 2019, he organized the first Myeloma March in Moncton. In fact, the Moncton march raised the most ($23,000) of any other march in Canada for the year. Mr. Crossman was subsequently awarded the Nathalie Allard Memorial Award from Myeloma Canada for the leadership he has shown since his diagnosis.
In 2019, Mr. Crossman started the Moncton Myeloma Support Group. In 2020, the 2nd Annual Moncton Myeloma March raised more than $27,000. In 2020 Mr. Crossman was welcomed into the International Myeloma Foundation as a support group leader.
“I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the citizens of Moncton for the tremendous amount of support they have shown me,” he says. “It truly warms my heart.”
In the past, he has also served as a volunteer hockey coach with Lewisville Minor Hockey and is an active member of St. Bernard’s Church parish. He was also invited to join the board of directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Moncton and has been a director since January 2019.
“The residents of Ward 1 and the City of Moncton need fiscally responsible, personable and hard-working councillors working for them with city staff and other government officials to make sure Ward 1 and the City of Moncton continue to move forward,” Mr. Crossman says. “Our citizens need their calls returned, their emails replied to, and to be met with in person.”
